ADA Compliant Renovations

Posted by Daniel Mizrahi on Wednesday, August 30, 2017

For many families, there comes a time when the home needs to be remodeled to make it accessible for the elderly or disabled. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) outlines a variety of ways that homes can be retrofitted to make them more safe and accommodating for those with limited mobility. If a change in your life circumstances has created the need for ADA compliant renovations in your home, Open Hand Remodeling can help!

Installing Ramps, Lifts, and Elevators in Homes

Unless your entire home is built at street level, you may need renovations to make it wheelchair-accessible. Sometimes this just involves a simple ramp up to the front door. However, often wheelchair access requires a mechanical lift for helping with the stairs. Some homes can even be equipped with an elevator to give maximum accessibility for the elderly or disabled.

Below is a photo of an attractive wheelchair ramp designed for a wounded veteran.

Safe and Accessible Bathrooms

For those with disabilities or those at risk of falling, the bathroom can be a difficult challenge. We can help you convert your bathroom into a safe, accessible place for you and your loved ones.

A good place to start is with a wheelchair accessible sink. This style of vanity has no cabinet underneath, allowing a wheelchair to be moved closer so the user can reach the sink.

For the tub/shower area, one trend that is gaining popularity is the walk-in tub. This style of tub has a door that opens to allow the user to step in without lifting the legs like a traditional tub. Another option is a wheelchair-accessible shower, with no threshold on the floor and a wide door. A hand-held showerhead wand or fully-adjustable mounted shower head can complete the modified shower plan.

The photo below shows an accessible pedestal sink and a no-threshold shower.
