Benefits of an Open Floor Plan

Posted by Daniel Mizrahi on Monday, September 21, 2015

Older homes are often made of compartmentalized spaces: the living room is separated from the dining room, which is walled off from the kitchen, which is removed from the rest of the house.  Having distinct, separate rooms (often connected by a hallway) used to be the norm, and chances are, unless you live in a newly constructed home, this is true for you.

Recently, however, more and more homeowners are abandoning this dated home design and falling in love with open floor plans. Creating an open floor plan involves opening up a home’s primary living space into one or more open rooms. Instead of having the dining room, living room, and kitchen walled off from each other, an open floor plan combines the best dining room, living room, and kitchen layout ideas by creating a great room where these spaces flow seamlessly into each other. This kind of layout can help your space seem bigger without requiring additions to your home.

Consider the following advantages of this home remodeling idea:

1. More space, more light
Open floor plans are the ultimate optical illusion: they make your space feel bigger and roomier without adding a single square foot. Removing walls clears up your line of sight: instead of seeing a wall whether you turn, you’re instead treated to views of rooms flowing into rooms flowing into rooms. This setup also creates another natural advantage: more light. Any light source -- a sliding glass door, a skylight, a bay window -- is now capable of illuminating your entire main floor instead of being restricted to a single room. A lighter space always feels bigger and less cluttered, which means that you get to enjoy a roomy living area without actually having to make your home larger (or clean up).

2. Show off your home
Perhaps you’ve just invested in an updated kitchen, and you can’t wait to show it off to guests…until the guests arrive, and you’re left in the kitchen while everyone else gathers in the living room. Or maybe everyone tries to cram into your kitchen, leaving you with no space to prepare and added stress. With an open floor plan, you can appreciate the hard work you’ve put into your home from any vantage point.

3. Make entertaining easier
An open floor plan is the ideal for entertainment, whether you like to throw sizeable house parties or you just like hosting the occasional dinner for a small group of friends. Friends can mingle in small or large groups, separate or together: a card game, a conversation, and a dance party can all happen in different parts of the great room, and with great lines of sight. No one has to miss out on any of the fun.

4. Great for families
If you want to be able to keep an eye on your children while preparing a meal, watching a television show, or sweeping the floor, then an open floor plan is for you.  Even when you’re not worried about chores or childcare, an open floor plan helps bring the family together: everyone can co-mingle in the same space without getting in each other’s way. It’s great for holidays and family gatherings, too: now the person cooking the turkey and the person watching the game don’t have to be different people.
