Kitchen Lighting Ideas - Under Cabinet Lights

Posted by Daniel Mizrahi on Saturday, July 15, 2017

When you make the investment of a kitchen remodel in your Los Angeles home, you want to make sure you do it right. One of the details that makes the difference between "meh" and "Wow!" is your choice of lighting fixtures. With thousands of suppliers and millions of fixtures to choose from, how do you even begin to sort out what kitchen lighting options you want? One great new trend is under-cabinet lighting, which is appearing in elegant kitchens across Los Angeles County.

Under cabinet lighting

A exciting trend in kitchen design is to put lighting on the bottom surface of the upper cabinets. This has a great practical function. Since the person working at a counter typically casts a shadow over their own workplace, it can be hard to see while cooking. However, under-cabinet lighting provides illumination from the opposite direction, improving the lighting as you work.

This type of lighting also provides several aesthetic benefits. When the under-cabinet lights are turned on, it adds brightness and unique highlights to your kitchen. It can also provide an intimate, cozy feel to the kitchen if the main lighting is turned off.

Most styles of under-cabinet lighting are designed to be out of sight for an adult of average height. The fixtures are flush-mounted under the cabinets, so that you receive the benefit of the light, without seeing the fixture.

Styles of under-cabinet lights

A series of puck-shaped lights will provide targeted illumination at regular intervals. This has the advantage of being something you can place strategically for maximum benefit. Nowadays, these are nearly all LED fixtures, meaning you won't have to worry about replacing hard-to-find bulbs, or about a spike on your electric bill.

Another great option for under-cabinet lighting is LED strips. These provide constant illumination, so that all of your countertop space is equally lit.

Canister-style lights are also an option under your cabinets, but these are not surface-mounted. This means the top of the fixture actually intrudes upwards into the cabinet bottom. Depending on your specific cabinets, this might not have any impact on the visual or functional aspects of your cabinets.

One of the key factors in choosing your under-cabinet lighting is the power supply. Any elegance gained by your under-cabinet lights will be immediately lost by unsightly cords travelling in conspicuous places. Be sure to look into the power supply for your specific lights, and how they can be installed inconspicuously.

Another use for these same light fixtures is on top of your cabinets. This illuminates your ceiling and provides a sense of height and openness to the room. You can even put under-cabinet lights under the front edge of your bottom cabinets, illuminating the floor!
