What are the basics you need to know about refacing your kitchen cabinets? Read below to find out!
First, if you’ve never considered refacing cabinets, or you’re not sure what the pros of that decision may be, it can be a great solution to updating your kitchen without blowing your budget.
Another major benefit of refacing your kitchen cabinets is that you have endless options when it comes to look and material. Some perennial favorites include:
Laminates
Laminates are hugely popular for their affordability and versatility. Laminates come in virtually any color or pattern you can imagine. If you haven’t gotten to the point that everything in your kitchen matches (perhaps you’re dealing with different colored appliances, or you haven’t had the time or money to fix the clashing grout and flooring combination), the endless color and style options for laminate make it easy to find that exact shade that will actually work for your kitchen.
Rigid Thermofoil (RTF) Doors
Rigid Thermofoil is the most budget-friendly option of the bunch. RTF doors don’t come in as many colors and style as plastic laminates do, but since RTF is a vinyl material, it can be worked more easily around oddly shaped cabinets and corners.
Real Wood
The most expensive option, but for a reason: a real wood veneer is the classic, beautiful, long-lasting option when refacing your cabinets. If you have high quality wood cabinets that you’re planning on keeping around, and you simply want to freshen or update your kitchen’s look, a real wood veneer is a great option.
With all of that being said, is there any reason NOT to reface kitchen cabinets instead of just replacing them? Sure. Refacing your cabinets will not fix problems like shoddy construction, sagging shelves, or inadequate space. If your kitchen cabinets are low quality, refacing them will just mask (some of) the problem instead of solving it. In this case, you might want to consider getting completely new cabinets installed.
