Should I Upgrade My Windows for Better Energy Efficiency?

Posted by Daniel Mizrahi on Wednesday, May 31, 2017

In most homes that have existed for more than a couple of decades, the original windows are like money drains, allowing your cooling money to seep away at an alarming rate. Even in homes that are only 10 to 15 years old, the energy efficiency of the windows is less than that of new models. So, should you replace your windows in order to save energy?

While replacing your windows is a big investment, it can pay for itself in several ways. In many cases, upgrading your windows for energy-efficient models will lower your bills and increase the value of your house, making it a great investment with a positive ROI.

How do new windows save you money?

Newer windows are designed with improved materials that do a superior job of preventing airflow and heat transfer. This keeps the hot air outside and your cold air in, far better than windows could in previous decades.

Additionally, new "low-E" coated windows have a protective layer that prevents UV radiation from coming into the home, with two excellent benefits. First, it prevents your home from heating up like a greenhouse. Second, it slows down the fading effects the sunlight would have on furniture, carpets and walls.

Finally, new windows will make your home more attractive to potential buyers, increasing its desirablity, and thus its sales potential. No one wants to buy a home with windows that look like they will need replacing.

Another benefit of replacing older windows with new ones is the ease of opening and cleaning. If your older windows are hard (or impossible) to open, it's time for an upgrade. Many "double-hung" windows are also very easy to clean on the inside and out, simply by tipping the windowpane inwards.

Concerns with window replacement

If your home is older, you may have more to think about than worn-out windows. There may also be asbestos or lead paint in your walls. That's why it's best to speak with a licensed general contractor about the state of your home before beginning any renovations, remodels or window replacements.

As you choose your windows and your remodeling contractor, make sure to look into the warranty details. Ask your contractor who will be responsible for the materials AND the labor costs if there is a problem with the windows.
