What Type of Flooring Should I Use in My Los Angeles Kitchen

Posted by Daniel Mizrahi on Monday, April 30, 2018

When designing or remodeling a kitchen, it can feel like there are endless decisions and choices: what color, what style, what features? One of the biggest of these decisions is what type of kitchen flooring to use. Often, we don’t give the floor beneath our feet a second thought, but the flooring that we put into our homes - especially heavily-used areas like the kitchen - can make a huge practical and aesthetic difference. If you are planning a kitchen remodeling project, here are some of the best and most popular choices for kitchen flooring.

Wood

Hardwood flooring is one of the most popular choices for kitchens. Wood flooring gives a timeless, classic, and warm look to your kitchen. Hardwood is also one of the most durable options, sometimes lasting for generations! Although it can be a more expensive choice up front, having hardwood floors installed in your kitchen will boost the value of your home. A wood floor is also relatively soft to stand on, taking some pressure off your feet. If you are doing a larger home renovation project, keep in mind that hardwood flooring is an excellent choice for open floor plans, as it makes a wonderful continuous flooring through kitchen and living spaces.

Stone or Tile

Natural stone or porcelain tile is another classy and beautiful flooring for kitchens. Tiles are a popular choice in the Los Angeles area, where their cool feeling is a bonus. Porcelain tiles can range in appearance from high gloss modern to rustic old world. Stone or tile floors in your kitchen will enhance the value of your home. They are highly durable and require little maintenance. Porcelain tiles are very resistant to water, which can make them a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms. One downside to natural stone or porcelain flooring is their relative hardness.  They can be tiring to stand on for long periods of time, and dishes dropped on this floor are more likely to shatter.

Vinyl

Vinyl flooring is easy to clean, easy on your feet, and easy on the budget! While vinyl flooring does not have the longevity of natural wood or stone, it is resistant to stain and water, and easy to maintain. It is a resilient flooring, less likely to cause tired, achy legs or break dishes. A great feature of vinyl is that it can mimic the look of just about any other type of flooring—from bamboo to flagstone—providing huge scope for the imagination while keeping to a tight budget. If you are doing a kitchen remodeling or home renovation project on a budget, vinyl may be a flooring you want to consider.
